Five to Thrive: For Seniors..

  1. Regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health. It can prevent many of the health problems that seem to come with age. It also helps your muscles grow stronger so you can keep doing your day-to-day activities without becoming dependent on others.

  2. Stay Social! What better way to share some of your lifetime experiences by volunteering! Not only is volunteering rewarding but it also builds friendships, and maintains good physical and mental health.

  3. Communicate and document your wishes to your family. Advance care planning can be a gift you give yourself and your family. It is about doing what you can to ensure that your wishes and preferences are consistent with the health care treatment you might receive if you were unable to speak for yourself or make your own decisions

  4. What’s on your plate? Eating a well-planned, balanced mix of foods every day gives you the nutrients needed to keep your muscles, bones, organs, and other parts of your body healthy throughout your life. If you have a specific medical condition, be sure to check with your health care team or registered dietitian about foods you should include or avoid.

  5. If you are a driver age 65 or older, you can make your time behind the wheel safer by:
    • Asking your doctor or pharmacist to review your medicines (both prescription and over-the counter) to reduce possible side effects and drug interactions.
    • Having your eyes checked by an eye doctor at least once a year, and wearing your glasses and contact lenses as required.
    • Planning your route before you drive.
